Seemingly overnight, DeepSeek-V3 has captured the attention of the AI world, and for a number of reasons. DeepSeek-V3 represents a transformative leap in AI model training. It dramatically reduces the costs and computational requirements traditionally associated with large language models (LLMs). By enabling businesses to develop highly customized AI solutions without the prohibitive expenses of previous methods, DeepSeek-V3 also removes key barriers to enterprise adoption. Its breakthroughs in efficiency—such as cutting memory usage by 50% and slashing GPU requirements—make advanced AI more accessible, scalable, and aligned with business-specific needs.

As major players like Meta, Google, and OpenAI take note, the implications are clear: enterprises can now train and fine-tune AI models with unprecedented speed and affordability, driving innovation while reducing dependency on costly third-party solutions.

DeepSeek-V3 transforms the AI landscape

Before DeepSeek-V3, businesses encountered substantial challenges in customizing LLMs to fulfill their specific needs. The methods available—such as refining prompts or making minor adjustments to existing models—offered some level of customization but had significant drawbacks, including:

  • Limited adaptability to business needs. Previous approaches could only make surface-level adjustments, preventing AI from deeply comprehending industry-specific knowledge and workflows. This frequently resulted in inconsistent or inaccurate outcomes, particularly in fields requiring high precision, like the legal and medical industries.

  • High costs and complexity. Customizing AI models demanded considerable computing power, making it expensive and difficult for many businesses—especially smaller ones—to maintain and scale.

  • Risk of losing valuable knowledge. When altering models, businesses often faced a trade-off: new customizations could overwrite or diminish core capabilities, leading to unpredictable performance.

DeepSeek-V3 transforms the landscape by providing a cost-effective method to fully train AI models tailored to each business. It eliminates prior limitations, enhancing AI’s accuracy, scalability, and alignment with business goals—without high costs or technical hurdles.

According to The Wall Street Journal, DeepSeek-V3 required significantly fewer chips for training—just 10,000 compared to the millions used by technology giants—resulting in an estimated development cost of only $5.6 million, while other advanced AI models cost around $1 billion.

DeepSeek-V3 offers a smarter, more cost-effective approach to special language model (SLM) and domain-specific model creation

DeepSeek-V3 introduces significant breakthroughs that accelerate AI development, making it more efficient and affordable for businesses.

1. Train AI models faster and more cost-efficiently

  • More efficient processing, powered by advanced eight-bit precision, enables DeepSeek-V3 to reduce memory usage by 50%, cutting training costs while enhancing performance.

  • Smarter scaling—made possible by an optimized AI model design—eliminates inefficiencies, enabling businesses to construct large-scale AI systems without costly infrastructure.

2. Customize models quickly and efficiently

  • Streamlined knowledge transfer enables DeepSeek-V3 to improve AI reasoning and accuracy by effectively transferring expertise from advanced models to new ones.

  • Minimal computing requirements make AI customization quicker and more accessible, with fine-tuning and compliance adjustments requiring 95% fewer computing resources.

3. Make AI more affordable for businesses

DeepSeek-V3 significantly lowers the cost of training custom AI models—reducing GPU usage to under three million hours. This makes high-performance AI available to companies of all sizes, eliminating the need for costly third-party models. In turn, this increased availability makes high-performance AI more accessible to all companies, alleviating dependence on expensive third-party models as businesses progress toward SLM adoption.

DeepSeek-V3’s changes and efficiencies will take hold

Centific anticipates that these changes and efficiencies will be adopted by other LLM providers like Meta, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic.

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen described DeepSeek-V3 as “[AI’s] Sputnik moment.“ This breakthrough may lower AI training costs for firms like Meta, which plans to invest $65 billion in AI this year. However, Pierre Ferragu from New Street Research notes, “Increased competition rarely reduces aggregate spending.”

We observe that more advanced frontier models will still need to push technical boundaries and utilize sophisticated computing resources, while smaller “lagging edge” models will endeavor to develop more cost-effective AI features. As Figure 1 indicates, the technologies and techniques used by DeepSeek-V3 will soon be adapted for use by model providers, resulting in the cost of AI model training coming down drastically as developers focus more on quality datasets.

As of early February 2025, we are already seeing that some chief information officers are testing the model’s effectiveness for various business applications. Meanwhile, cautious about data security concerns and the model’s Chinese ownership, others are enthusiastic about its potential to lower AI costs in the U.S.

New York Life Chief Data and Analytics Officer Don Vu told The Wall Street Journal that New York Life will not use the existing DeepSeek-V3 application due to its data security issues. Instead, the company intends to download the open-source version and begin experimentation.
